Osteolytic Lesion Curettage with Snake Robot

We have an active collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory
to develop a robotic system for minimally-invasive curettage of osteolytic
lesions in bone. One novel aspect of the system is a 6 mm diameter nitinol steerable

Robotic Laryngeal Surgery

Over 25,000 new cases of throat cancer are reported every year in the US, resulting in approximately 6,000 deaths per year . Since the throat area is fraught with complications for many cancer treatment techniques, such as radiation and chemotherapy, but relatively accessible to surgical techniques, a surgical approach is often taken. Two main surgical techniques are used: conventional surgery, and intra-airway surgery. Intra-airway surgery has many advantages over…

Optimization-Based Virtual Fixtures for Robotic Systems

Most robotic assisted surgical
procedures are characterized by restricted access to the
workspace as well as constrained manipulation of a surgical
tool. In such cases, the surgeons’ ability can be augmented by
techniques such as virtual fixtures. Virtual fixtures are algorithms which
provide anisotropic behavior to surgeons’ motion commands in
addition to filtering out tremor to provide safety and precision.
